Author : D. Appleton
Detail : “Collector’s item, landmark within the history of the yank guide, pic of North yank within the decennium – Appleton’s enchiridion warrants a novel place on the `must buy’ booklist of any human, railway enthusiast, historiographer or americanaphile. Originally made because the railway networks of the us of America and North American nation were stretching across the huge continent, and as business by rail became a heavy recreation for the burgeoning middle categories, it absolutely was the primary traveler guide specifically organized around railway journeys, and to the current day offers a glimpse through the carriage window of a continent lost to history. this is {often|this can be} a facsimile of the particular book – often observed as ‘Appleton’s Guide’ – that galvanized the nice yank Railroad Journeys tv series with archangel Portillo, probably the sole living example of the 1879 edition. it’s a definite copy with a removable belly-band.”

Detail - A facsimile edition of the classic 1879 travel guide—often referred to as “Appleton’s Guide”—that inspired the Great American Railroad Journeys PBS television series with Michael Portillo. Appleton’s Railway Guide to the United States & Canada was originally published in two volumes, describing the variety of attractions offered in each North American town or city the train traveler would encounter along the railway system's numerous routes. It was the first tourist guide specifically organized around railway journeys, offering a rare glimpse through the carriage window of a continent lost to history. As with many guidebooks of the era, Appleton Guides became obsolete as routes and destinations became less popular and new guidebooks took their place. Both these volumes became collector’s items due to their rarity, until now. An unprecedented snapshot of North America in the 1870s, Appleton’s Railway Guide is a must-have for any travel and railway enthusiast, historian, and fan of Americana.

Detail - From the perspective of the investigator, Graves' disease is a fascinating disorder with unique features and opportunities for study. The discovery in 1956 that Graves' disease was caused by a humoral factor, later shown to be an antibody to the TSH receptor, was a triumph for modern investigative medicine. Rapid progress is now being made in (i) understanding the molecular interaction between autoantibodies and the TSH receptor, (ii) identifying the genes that contribute to the predisposition to disease, (iii) developing an animal model of Graves' disease, and (iv) identifying the long-sought orbital antigen in ophthalmopathy. From the clinical standpoint, although Graves' disease is eminently treatable, there is no definitive cure. None of the therapeutic options are ideal. It is hoped that rapid progress in understanding the pathogenesis of the disease will lead to the ultimate goal of some form of immunotherapy that will make antithyroid drugs, radioiodine and thyroidectomy obsolete. The chapters in Graves' Disease: Pathogenesis and Treatment represent the viewpoints of many prominent clinicians and investigators working in the field. The editors are grateful for their contributions which cover an unusually comprehensive compendium of subjects relating to the disease.
