Detail - Throughout history, royal dynasties have dominated countries and empires around the world. Kings, queens, emperors, chiefs, pharaohs, czars - whatever title they ruled by, monarchs have shaped institutions, rituals, and cultures in every time period and every corner of the globe. The concept of monarchy originated in prehistoric times and evolved over centuries right up to the present. Efforts to overthrow monarchies or evade their rule - such as the American, French, Chinese, and Russian revolutions - are considered turning points in world history. Even today, many countries retain their monarchies, although in vastly reduced form with little political power. One cannot understand human history and government without understanding monarchs and monarchies. This fully-illustrated encyclopedia provides the first complete survey of all the major rulers and ruling families of the world, past and present. No other reference work approaches the topic with the same sense of magnitude or connection to historical context. Arranged in A-Z format for ease of access, World Monarchies and Dynasties includes information on major monarchs and dynasties from ancient time to the present. This set: includes overviews of reigns and successions, genealogical charts, and dynastic timelines; addresses concepts, problems, and theories of monarchy; provides background and information for further research; highlights important places, structures, symbols, events, and legends related to particular monarchs and dynasties; includes a master bibliography and multiple indexes.

Detail - The present volume treats the descendants of Lady Elizabeth Mortimer, wife first of Henry, Lord Percy, K.G., called "Hotspur," and secondly, of Thomas, Lord Camoys, K.G. The plan followed is identical with that adopted in the Clarence and Exeter volumes. The lines from Lady Elizabeth are traced out in a series of tables until about the beginning of the nineteenth century; then in the body of the book the descendants of the various persons last named in the tables are set out in the order of primogeniture. The full dates of birth, marriage, and death are given, and in the cases of married persons the names of the husband and wife. Lady Elizabeth Mortimer was the elder daughter of Edmund (Mortimer), 3rd Earl of March, by his wife the Lady Philippa, only child and heir of Lionel (of Antwerp), Duke of Clarence, the eldest of the four sons of King Edward III of whom issue now survives. With this part is included a supplement containing some further descendants of the Duchess of Exeter and the Countess of Essex, which the compiler has since succeeded in tracing. The supplement and text each contain separate indices. This is a must for anyone researching royal bloodlines!

Detail - Catherine de Valois, daughter of the French king Charles VI, is born into troubled times. Though she is brought up in a royal court, it is a stormy and unstable environment. Before she is out of her teens, Catherine is married off to England's Henry V as part of a treaty honoring his victory over France. She is terrified at the idea of being married to a man who is a foreigner, an enemy, and a rough soldier, and is forced to leave her home for England. Within two years she is widowed, and mother to the future King of England and France—even though her brother has laid claim to the French crown for himself. Caught between warring factions of her own family and under threat by the powerful lords of the English court, she must find a way to keep her infant son safe. In Owain Tudor, a childhood friend for whom Catherine has long had affection and who now controls the Royal household, Catherine finds both strength and kinship. As their friendship turns to love, however, she risks not only her life and that of her son but the uneasy balance of power in England and France that will be forever changed. History comes alive in this lyrical and moving true story of one woman's courage and the inception of one of the most famous royal lineages of all time.
